Prothrombin Time (PT)

  • Serum

  • Average: 10-13 seconds

  • To screen for coagulation deficiency
  • To investigate the effects of liver failure and DIC
  • To measure the response to oral coumadin anticoagulant therapy
  • In oral anticoagulant therapy, the therapeutic goal is a prothrombin time 2 times the normal value.
  • International normalized ratio (INR) provides a standardized measurement of the response to oral anticoagulant treatment.  INR is 2.5 to 3.5 in therapeutic range.

  • Excess anticoagulant therapy
  • Deficiency of fibrinogen, prothrombin, Factor V,VI or X
  • Liver disease
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • DIC

  • Lipemia
  • Hemolysis
  • Inadequate blood sample
  • Prolonged delay before analysis is performed
