Excessive thirst, Drinking Water Excessively



  • Excessive drinking of water and excessive thirst, fairly common symptoms, are often reactions to fluid lost during exercise, excessive sweating (excessive loss of salt and water), or excessive salt intake.
  • Other causes may be more serious, such as uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetes Insipidus, drug-induced Dehydration (e.g., from diuretics, demeclocycline), as a result of blood and fluid loss in burn victims, due to Sepsis, and as a result of psychiatric illness (psychogenic Polydipsia) as seen in schizophrenics.
