Nuclear scan (Isotope scan)

  • Normal uptake, distribution, and excretion of the radionuclide by the targeted organ or tissue
No anbormality of structure or function in the targeted organ

  • A gamma camera or scintillation scanner records the radioactive emissions, these emissions are
converted by computer to image that correspond to the location, distribution, concentration of the
radionuclide in the target organ or tissue.

  • To assess the physiologic function
  • To assist in the localization and diagnosis of abnormality in a designated organ or tissue

  • Organ atrophy or fibrosis
  • Cyst
  • Tumor
  • Metastatic lesions
  • Inflammation
  • Abscess
  • Congenital defect
  • Obstruction of a duct
  • Hyperactivity of function
  • Hematoma
  • Traumatic disruption of tissue
  • Vascular obstruction
  • Ischemia or necrosis of tissue

  • Failure to follow specific pretest dietary or medication restrictions
  • Recent intake of iodine
