- Normal ventilation and perfusion
- Ventilation-perfusion ratio of 0.85 or greater

- Serum albumin passed through the right side of the heart into pulmonary artery. A radiation detector scan of the lungs shows the diffusion of the radioactive albumin throughout the pulmonary vessels
- Xenon-133, Xenon-127, or krypton-81 m is given via inhalation.

- To evaluate patients with decreased pulmonary function
- Ventilation scan -- to evaluate the distribution of gas within the lungs
- Perfusion scan -- to evaluate pulmonary arterial blood flow
- V/Q scans are ordered to confirm the diagnosis of Pulmonary Emboli

- Pulmonary vascular occulsion resulting from thrombus,cysts, Abscess, carcinomas, necrotizing pneumonia.
- Inadequate ventilation resulting from Atelectasis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, adult respiratory distress syndrome, retained secretions, pleural effusion, pneumonia, Pneumothorax
