Common Cold

Viral rhinitis

  • The syndrome known as the "common cold" can be caused by any one of a number of viruses. These include rhinoviruses and adenoviruses.

  • Nasal Congestion
  • Clear runny nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Scratchy throat
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

  • Treatments that may shorten the course of a cold:
    1. Zinc lozenges
    2. Echinacea
    3. Vitamin C (500 mg is probably sufficient)
    4. Chicken soup (believe it or not, one medical study showed it to be beneficial)
    5. Antibiotics do not help!
  • Treatment for symptoms:
    1. Pseudophedrine (Sudaphed) by mouth
    2. Oxymetazolone or phenylephrine nasal spray for a few days of use (longer can cause a rebound effect, i.e., worsening Nasal Congestion and drainage)
    3. Wash your hands often, especially during cold and flu season.

  • Otitis Media ("ear infection") or sinus infections (nasal drainage turns yellow or green) may complicate the common cold. These usually do need to be treated with antibiotics.
