Abnormal
  • This is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Haemophilus ducreyi. It often occurs simultaneously with other sexually transmitted diseases, such as Herpes, Syphilis, and HIV infection.

  • Pus-filled blister initially
  • Lesion then rupture and become ulcerated
  • Multiple lesions then form, often joining together
  • Women may have the disease with lesions
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Lymph glands may burst
  • Fever, chills, and malaise
  • Inflammation of the head of the penis
  • Inflammation of the clitoris
  • Foreskin of penis becomes narrowed

  • Sexual transmission
  • Contact with lesion by medical personnel

  • Culture on a special petri dish

  • Antibiotics -- many work well:
    1. Azithromycin -- single dose by mouth
    2. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) -- single dose injection
    3. Augmentin
    4. Erythromycin
    5. Ciprofloxacin
