Barium Enema



No lesion, deficits, or abnormalities of the colon are noted



After the colon is completely emptied of feces, the barium is instilled.
X-ray images are taken to identify the abnormalities.



To investigate pathologic changes in the structure or function of the colon



1)Carcinoma
2)Diverticulitis
3)Hirschsprung's disease
4)Idiopathic megacolon
5)Polyps
6)Gastroenteritis
7)Chronic amebic dysentery
8)Ulcerative colitis
9)Crohn's disease
10)Intussusception



1)Residual barium from an upper GI series
2)Inability to retain barium
3)Incomplete cleansing of the colon
